Story Preview
At a winter celebration, a woman watches her husband make room for everyone except their daughter. He expects her to forgive the slight by morning, as she has done before. Instead, she leaves with the girl and asks a friend to return the family’s gifts unopened. When a report of an accident reaches the household, she does nothing to correct the belief that they were in the car.
The false death gives her time to find a home and work her husband cannot take away with a phone call. It also lets her see who grieves for the child and who immediately starts dividing the family’s possessions. Months later, her daughter asks when they can stop using different names. The mother can keep the disguise that made them safe, or come back with proof of the choices that drove them out. Either way, the child deserves a life that is more than a punishment for her father.
